As the light of the sun vanishes, Mustang learns the loss which comes from seeing the other side of the Gateway – and five sacrifices gather in the dark presence of the Father.

Full Synopsis

Continuing off from the previous episode, the Gold-Toothed Doctor asks Mustang to perform Human Transmutation to save Hawkeye's life which Mustang seems to to give in, but actually accepts her request not to perform Human Transmutation. The doctor is surprised that Mustang would sacrifice a pawn, but Mustang responds by pointing out it is nothing compared to the sacrifices the doctor himself had made in human sacrifices. The doctor reveals that the zombies who were the Führer Bradley candidates are glad to be sacrificial pawns, since they were raised by him after their parents abandoned them and would have died without his aid. Mustang points out that this overconfidence has caught the doctor off-balance, and the doctor disappears before asking what Mustang meant. The jar containing the liquid Philosopher's Stone falls on one of the zombies heads and it turns out the Gold-Toothed Doctor was caught in the saliva of Jerso in his Chimera form who is hanging from the pipes around the ceiling. The doctor tries to talk Jerso into letting him go so he can save Hawkeye's life, but Jerso knows that line won't work on him. Mei and the transformed Zampano drop down into the room and use their individual weapons on the zombie soldiers, allowing Mustang and Scar to break free. During the fight, Mei tries to get the Philosopher's Stone, but a zombie soldier kicks the jar away, while Mustang breaks through with his flame alchemy thanks to his remaining glove and goes to Hawkeye. Before a distracted Mustang is struck down, a transformed Darius arrives from the ceiling and knocks down the soldier.

While chasing the jar, Mei notices Roy and the wounded Hawkeye, and knowing it comes first, uses her Alkahestry on Hawkeye. Mustang thanks her, but Mei explains all she did was stop the bleeding and that Hawkeye needs a real doctor. After waking up, Hawkeye apologizes and thanks Mustang for understanding her wish. Mustang admits that when he saw her face like that he could tell she would shoot him if he performed Human Transmutation. Before Mei can pick up the jar, someone else does it first - King Bradley (Wrath). Noticing that Bradley's earlier wounds aren't healing, Mustang states he is looking good as ever and it is revealed that after being knocked into the moat earlier, Bradley survived by swimming into the underground tunnels through the sewer drainage. Bradley is surprised because he imagined Mustang wouldn't hesitate to save a comrade's life after looking at the wounded Hawkeye. Mustang admits he would have in the past, but now he has comrades who would stop him if he attempted it and show him the right path. Bradley states that he always expected humans to be the same and though there are some who can actually change, this factor is what infuriates him greatly. Mei then senses Father and the doctor points out he won't let them interfere with him. When Jerso responds to him to give it up, something mysterious injures him and knocks Jerso to the ground. While Zampano helps get his partner out of the way, the new entrant that Mei can sense is none other than Selim Bradley (Pride).

Handing Hawkeye over to Darius, Mustang faces Wrath, who dodges Mustang's flame alchemy attacks before pinning him down to the ground by stabbing both of Mustang's hands with two nearby swords. The doctor thanks Bradley for his help, but is stabbed by Pride's shadows and completely covered by it as Pride uses his shadows to create a transmutation circle around Wrath and Mustang to proceed with making Mustang a sacrifice, while the doctor's body is hoisted above it. Above ground, numerous dogs are barking as one of the owners notices the eclipse is starting. Pride and Wrath reveal that since they are out of time, they have no choice but to use the alchemical knowledge the Gold-Toothed Doctor possesses which Pride had assimilated and use Mustang as a sacrifice by force to open The Gate and send him there even if he won't perform Human Transmutation. Once Wrath questions what Mustang will lose as a toll, they begin the procedure and afterwards, the doctor appears in a transmuted and disfigured bloated form while Wrath, who is now alone, explains that Mustang is now with Father. Wrath then states that considering his weakened condition, who amongst the remaining group can defeat him. Darius, however, realizes they can't beat him, even though Wrath had already been injured. Jerso, Scar, and Mei realize that Wrath is a distraction and that Father and the sacrifices are right below them. In response, Scar creates a shockwave on the ground.

Meanwhile, after seeing Truth, Mustang arrives at where the other sacrifices are, followed by Pride. Father announces to Pride that everything is ready except Al's soul is not here yet, while Ed and Izumi are tending to the unconscious Mustang. After talking and confirming that he has seen The Gate, Mustang's comments that he can only see pitch blackness which makes Ed realize that the Flame Alchemist's eyesight was the toll for being sent to The Gate. Though his face is peeling away a little bit as a side effect for helping turn Mustang into one of the sacrifices, Pride is happy with this since Mustang's flame alchemy abilities would make him the most troublesome to deal with at the moment amongst all the State Alchemists. Once Mustang confirms to Ed that he did not perform Human Transmutation, Pride reveals that they had to force him open the gateway. Father then comments on what the Elric brothers, Izumi, and Mustang had lost as a toll when they opened the gateway which is why they call their god Truth, though Ed refuses to buy into this since they forced Mustang into The Gate against the Flame Alchemist's own will, which cost him his eyesight, and finds this fact unreasonable. Above them, Wrath realizes that the present group is going to interfere with Father, but Scar who is not in the small hole, sneaks up from behind him to attack and both combatants attacks are even matched. Wrath then asks what Scar's real name is. Scar responds that he has none as he cast his aside, to which Wrath states that he doesn't know his original name either and finds it amusing that two nameless ones like themselves are going to kill each other.

As the two start their next attack, Mei breaks into Father's lair and acknowledges despite his change of appearance, Father's Qi is still the same. Noticing Al's body, Mei goes to wake him up, while Al's mind is actually at The Gate where his human body is. After the human Al welcomes him, the armor Al notices that his human body has degraded and can barely stand up. Armor Al knows he can't fight if he gets his human body back right now due to it's failing condition. He tells human Al that while he wanted to get his human body back for a long time, he can't do it right now since his human body won't be able to cut it in their current situation. Human Al states that if his soul now residing in the armor wants to go back, he won't stop him as The Gate reopens. Going through, armor Al promises to come back later as he wakes up with Ed, Mei, and Izumi checking to see if he is all right. At the gate, human Al reports that while Al's soul has decided to remain in his armored body to help his friends (while also being proud of that he is his container), by making this choice, the world might become filled with despair. Father is now happy since all five sacrifices are present.

Episode Notes

  • The scene in which the King Bradley candidates are taken down is slightly altered in this episode, with May and Roy delivering non-lethal blows. It's Darius and the rest of the chimeras that finally put the candidates out of commission in the anime.
  • The scene where Alphonse is being dragged back into his metal body mirrors Edward's meeting with Al's body from Episode 26: Reunion, with both of them telling Al's body they will come back for him.
